An FDA First : Vaping Product Gets the Go-Ahead
The US FDA authorized a vaping product for the first time yesterday, greenlighting marketing of Vuse Solo tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes and cartridges.
The agency’s rationale: Tobacco-flavored products could help adult smokers cut back on traditional cigarettes, Reuters reports (▻https://globalhealthnow.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=eb20503b111da8623142751ea&id=072850f558&e=).
Marketing authorization was denied for certain flavored products most popular among teens.
The decision is part of a sweeping review of e-cigarette products, which have been on the US market for over a decade with minimal regulations or research, AP reports.
A decision about mega-popular Juul products is still pending.
Meanwhile in Australia, new laws require a prescription for nicotine-containing vaping products, The Guardian reported earlier this month.
According to Emily Banks, an Australian National University epidemiologist whose research informed the law, says the data don’t back up the claim that e-cigarettes are effective smoking cessation tools.
“You hear these vaping advocates saying, well, all those people using e-cigarettes out there are using them to quit smoking,” Banks said. “It simply isn’t true.”
Known unknowns: New research (▻https://globalhealthnow.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=eb20503b111da8623142751ea&id=a9ba418dc6&e=) has also shown that e-cigarette aerosols contain thousands of unknown chemicals that haven’t been disclosed by manufacturers and may carry a host of health risks that aren’t yet well understood, The Hub reported last week.
