Tokyo-based musician KK Null, real name Kazuyuki Kishino, has spent more than 40 years journeying from #punk to to experimental, ambient, to everything else in between. While arguably best known for his proggy noise rock band Zeni Geva, who have released albums via #Alternative_Tentacles, #Skin_Graft, and his own Nux Organization, Null has racked up hundreds of recording credits as a guitarist, electronic composer, sound manipulator, and more. Exploring his music—even just figuring out a jumping-off point—can feel incredibly overwhelming.

Yoni Kroll |#bandcamp_daily] : There are too many good songs on Maximum Implosion to pick a favorite, but the back-to-back combo of “Terminal Hz” and “Kettle Lake” certainly stands out. The former is pure Zeni Geva; the percussion sounds like a war march, the guitars like a swarm of venomous insects. It’s followed by a track featuring Steve Albini on vocals that feels—well, very much like a Shellac song, but with the added bonus of Zeni Geva backing him up. The second disc is a collection of live recordings they did together during some Japanese dates in 1992.
“What can you expect when a master of noise (KK Null) joins hands with one of the post-punk/industrial pioneers (Big Black)? You get a merciless and tormenting sonic assault on, which you perfectly recognize, the input of each artist. The typical harsh and very unique guitar play by Steve Albini creates a perfect cacophonous harmony with the noises and screams of Zeni Geva... a real opportunity to (re)discover this common project between opposite artists hailing from very different cultures. The sound and experiment is extreme, but definitely something apart from established projects. Both artists clearly had some fun creating one of the most unexpected sonic fusions, which I guess sounds more Japanese-like than American and/or European” (Side-Line)

Amazigh Freedom Rock 1973-1983 | Les Abranis
▻https://abranis.bandcamp.com/album/amazigh-freedom-rock-1973-1983
The Abranis story begins in the mid sixties, when two young Algerians crossed paths in one of Paris’ bohemian neighborhoods. Both were Kabyle, the Berber people from Algeria’s northern regions, and both had escaped the repression that began with Algeria’s 1962 independence and the establishment of its new, conservative constitution. The two young men, Shamy El Baz and Karim Abdenour, shared more than a common background: they both loved rock music, and both were passionate about fostering a modern Algerian sound, as inspired by Kabyle rhythms and melodies as it was by western rock. Living in cosmopolitan Paris meant that they came into contact with the wider North African community, whose sounds would increasingly influence the Abranis style, together with the musical trends of the time, from prog to disco.
The two musicians founded Les Abranis in 1967, joining forces with bass player Madi Mehdi and drummer Samir Chabane. Together they experimented by mixing Kabyle vocals and melodies with garage and #psych_rock. The next few years saw the release of a handful of singles on several France-based North African labels, a raucous Algerian tour, and several lineup changes. Shamy and Karim honed their fiery Kabyle/rock blend on tracks but as the ’70s progressed they increasingly moved away from the garage and psychedelia of their early days and began to interpret their Kabyle repertoire in more open and creative ways melting prog rock, jazz and some early electronic influences.

The Anarcho-Punk History of Chumbawamba | #Bandcamp_Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/features/chumbawamba-interview
Chumbawamba is as punk as it GETS. No, really: Chumbawamba, the band that was on MTV and the radio every 37 seconds, the band that had the one-hit-wonder jam “tubthumping” about drinking whisky and getting knocked down, the band that was played at your junior prom, was actually rooted in anarcho-politics and wrecking the system the entire time that they enveloped pop consciousness. In fact, they had been pumping out the #anarcho_punk tunes and supporting direct action measures for 15 years before their massive smash!
By blending elements of punk, folk, dance, and pop into a singular racket, they established a distinctive sound with disruptive appeal that snuck into the mainstream without anyone noticing their anarcho-punk bona fides before it was too late! And now, 2022 marks four decades since the band first began their radical mission and you can still hear “tubthumping” on the radio…and most people still don’t know about the band’s punk rock platform.
So, to mark the group’s 40th anniversary, Bandcamp spoke to Chumbawamba’s Dunstan Bruce, Danbert Nobacon, Alice Nutter, and Boff Whalley about the band’s early anarcho days.
If there were ever a Chumbawamba manifesto, it would read in the inconsistent, contradictory language of the Dadaists - part strident belligerence and part foolishness. This ending is no different; it comes almost as much of a surprise to us as it may do to you. Always more clown than politician, the band trips over its outsize feet and performs its final tumble.

The Return of Lavender Country, Queer Country Pioneers | #Bandcamp_Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/features/lavender-country-blackberry-rose-interview
Nearly 50 years ago, a queer, Marxist country band out of Seattle released one of the rawest and most revolutionary records of its era or any other. Lavender Country’s eponymous 1973 debut is the earliest known album solely devoted to reflecting gay and lesbian lives in wake of Stonewall. Self-released and distributed almost exclusively through mail order because no retail outfits besides a few underground gay bookstores would dare carry it, Lavender Country sold out its 1000-copy pressing and then vanished from history. In the early ’10s, “Cryin’ These Cocksucking Tears” resurfaced on YouTube, prompting the album’s 2014 reissue on Paradise of Bachelors—and now Don GIovanni Records has released Blackberry Rose, a similarly bold sequel almost 40 years in the making.

Any discussion of American garage rock in recent decades should begin with Thee Oh Sees. The California group, and its head honcho John Dwyer, have—over 20-odd years and a staggering 26 LPs (and counting)—built their name on unparalleled industriousness, unreal live shows, and an oft-imitated, never-duplicated signature sound: hard-driving, relentlessly grooving psychedelic punk with lyrical and thematic easter eggs galore for sci-fi and fantasy heads.

Total Punk: The Label That’s Exactly As Advertised | #Bandcamp_Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/label-profile/total-punk-label-profile
After weathering a difficult divorce, punk lifer Rich Evans decided he needed to do something positive to help lift his spirits. He decided to book a national tour, lining up shows in different cities that he’d always wanted to visit, made up of bands he’d always wanted to see. Evans wouldn’t be playing a note: he’d devised a six-week cross-country tour that he’d experience as an audience member. “I called it the ‘Everybody Gets Rich’ tour,” Evans says on the phone from his Portland home. “It was funny, people were giving me money from the door at the end of the night.”
Because Evans went on the tour alone, he had a lot of time by himself. During the long drives between cities, he entertained the idea of starting a joke record label that would take pre-orders for records, but would take forever to release them. When his customers had either given up or forgotten about their purchases, he’d send them their wares with an apology note, saying something like, “I had a really bad drug addiction and I was kicking, but I’m back and I’m sorry.” It was a nod to the epic threads on the punk forum Terminal Boredom calling out labels who actually did run on that business model.

Cheesecake- Boston Riot Grrrl band live in 1991.
Denise Monahan vocals and Tess Basilio guitar formed Cheescake in early 1991. They were co workers at an Art Museom in Boston who bonded over L7 . “Shove” was a life changer for both of them . After Seeing the Lunachicks live they got their equipment and their shit together. They brought in Caitlin Bermingham on bass, Lara on rhythm guitar and Coleen on drums. The second show they ever played was the first Riot Grrrl convention in Washington DC in August 1992. They appear in the documentary “Not Bad For a Girl.” They also had a song on the second Stars Kill Rock compilation. They were the only riot Grrrl band in Boston and played live often opening for many touring bands like Slant 6, Tribe 8, and the Lunachicks among others. The band also played NYC and Washington DC regularly where riot grrrl was thriving. In 1994 Denise left Cheescake and formed Milkmoney. Cheescake continued as a four piece and released a CD “You’re Soaking in it “ . Their run was short but powerful and they are proud to be original riot grrls who helped start the revolution.

Lifetime Achievement: Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Eternal Reggae/Dub Discography
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/lifetime-achievement/lee-scratch-perry-guide
A perfect showcase of the remarkable production skills of undisputed dub master Lee “Scratch” Perry, this is the final Upsetters LP to be recorded at The Black Ark studio before its closure!
“There are rare instances of a sequel being better than the original, and while some might argue that Lee Perry’s muggy mid-’70s classic Super Ape is untouchable, Return of the Super Ape proves far more outlandish and wiggly. Rumored to be the last album made at Black Ark in 1978, it, like its predecessor, boasts a cover of a giant ape wreaking havoc across the land (this one’s holding a giant spliff, though). Perry rants about vampires and Rastafarians on the muddy “Jah Jah Ah Natty Dread,” and “Psyche and Trim” uses slapback to add glints of light to the otherwise dark track. One can picture Perry as that titular ape, wrecking all the elements in a way so that the chaotic jumble feels just right.” - Andy Beta, #Bandcamp_Daily
Boom in the Night (Original Studio Recordings 1980-1983)

New York City legends the Bush Tetras have been making paranoid, groove-centered #post-punk since 1979, when Pat Place left James Chance and The Contortions to found the group with singer Cynthia Sley, bassist Laura Kennedy and drummer Dee Pop. Though spared mainstream success in an era when female fronted groups in the charts were pop acts, the Tetras’ single “Too Many Creeps” (1980) was a huge club hit and remains a classic.

The song is 30 seconds long, a minute at most. The drums are a blast of kick and snare; the guitars and bass blend together in a rumbling, noisy blur; the vocals are a raw-throated cry of rage. Is it #grindcore or is it #powerviolence? The two subgenres have much in common, and yet, for those whose ears are attuned to minute differences in subgenre, the distinction is clear.
