La journaliste @Beltrew tweete : « Meanwhile in parallel universe land #tahrir is a total post-party mess. People still celebrating stuff. » On y entend notamment « Army, police, people : one hand ! »
A suivre.

Clashes have left at least 92 people dead and hundreds injured in Cairo after security forces attacked supporters of ousted President Morsi, Egypt’s Health Ministry told RT Arabic. However, the Muslim Brotherhood puts the death toll at over 200.
A suivre.
Egypt: ’The injuries were very precise … the snipers were shooting to kill’ | World news | The Observer
▻http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/28/egypt-injuries-snipers
At 7am a medic treating the wounded at the site said he saw police shooters target those rescuing the wounded. “Even at that time, people were still dropping like flies,” said Dr Ahmed Said, a volunteer at the Rabaa al-Adawiya field hospital, a clinic set up originally to deal with minor injuries.
Some casualties reported seeing police or army snipers firing on protesters from buildings inside the nearby Al-Azhar University, and medics said the accuracy of the shooting suggested that snipers may have been in action.
“The injuries were very precise – which suggests they were shot by snipers,” said Dr Mohamed Lotfy, in charge of the clinic’s medical supplies. “There were bullet holes in the centre of the forehead and right in the back of the skull. It was not just shooting to injure. They were shooting to kill.”
Egypt: Many Protesters Shot in Head or Chest- ►http://www.hrw.org/news/2013/07/28/egypt-many-protesters-shot-head-or-chest
According to seven witnesses and footage reviewed by Human Rights Watch, the clashes between pro-Morsy supporters and police accompanied by men dressed in civilian clothes began at approximately 11 p.m., as pro-Morsy protesters approached the off ramp of the 6th of October bridge leading to Nasr Road. The site was just a few minutes’ walk from Rabaa mosque, where pro-Morsy supporters have been staging a 30 day sit-in. A doctor who was accompanying the protesters said that police, accompanied by men in plain clothes and armored police vehicles, were under the 6th of October bridge and initially fired teargas at the crowd. In videos posted online, Human Rights Watch also viewed a large group of civilians standing opposite pro-Morsy protestors, flanked by at least four armored police vehicles and personnel carriers, as well as Central Security Force officers.
During a press conference conducted at approximately 12:30 p.m. on July 27, Interior Minister Gen. Mohammed Ibrahim announced:
“.. . We never, as police, pointed any firearms at the chest of any demonstrator. ”
Over the past several years Human Rights Watch has documented the shooting of protesters with live ammunition and birdshot by the Central Security Forces, including during the uprising in January 2011, in November 2011 during the Mohamed Mahmoud protests which left 45 dead, and in January 2013 in Port Said which left 46 dead.

Mr. Ibrahim, the interior minister, raised the prospect of a new threat to the Brotherhood, saying Saturday that he was reconstituting a state security agency that under Mr. Mubarak was responsible for monitoring Islamists and known for carrying out torture and forced disappearances. Without security agencies that have a political focus, Mr. Ibrahim said, “the security of the country doesn’t work.”

Slavery compensation: Caribbean nations propose Mau Mau model | World news | guardian.co.uk
▻http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/26/caribbean-countries-slavery-compensation-claim
Leaders of more than a dozen Caribbean countries are launching a united effort to seek compensation from three European nations for what they say is the lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade.
The Caribbean Community, a regional organisation, has taken up the cause of compensation for slavery and the genocide of native peoples and is preparing for what would likely be a drawn-out battle with the governments of Britain, France and the Netherlands.
It has engaged the British law firm of Leigh Day, which waged a successful fight for compensation for hundreds of Kenyans who were tortured by the British colonial government during the so-called Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s and 1960s.
▻http://www.un.org/apps/newsFr/storyF.asp?NewsID=30756
Syria’s exodus : a refugee crisis for the world | World news | The Guardian

Western countries including the US and Britain may be asked to accept tens of thousands of Syrian refugees because the exodus from the civil war is overwhelming countries in the region, the UN’s refugee chief has warned.
In an interview with the Guardian, António Guterres, the United Nations high commissioner for refugees, said the situation was already far more than just a humanitarian crisis. If a resolution to the conflict was not found within months, the UN will look to resettle tens of thousands of Syrian refugees in countries better able to afford to host them, including Britain. Germany has already offered to take 5,000, but other offers have been limited, Guterres said.

The Egyptian authorities have targeted the underground passages as part of a drive to regain control of the vast Sinai desert, whose population is hostile to Cairo.
At the height of the black market trade between Gaza and Egypt there were thought to be more than 1,000 tunnels employing around 7,000 people – providing Hamas with an income from taxes and permits of millions of dollars a month, estimated at 40% of the government’s revenue. But Egypt is thought to have closed or destroyed around 80% of the tunnels.

Middle East: a wall of difficulties- ▻http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/18/editorial-middle-east-wall-difficulties
There is a sea change in the relations between western and Middle Eastern countries in progress which is both welcome and unwelcome. It is welcome because it is the beginning of the end for the residual colonialism which still marks western attitudes toward the region. The governments and the peoples of the region are making their own decisions, good or bad, with less and less reference to what outsiders, including the United States, desire. It is unwelcome because the resulting conflicts and crises seem to precisely demand that outsiders offer help. Yet the record of the outsiders, not just the long historical record, but the more immediate one, has plainly been littered with dismal mistakes.

Vatican offers ’time off purgatory’ to followers of Pope Francis tweets
Papal court handling pardons for sins says contrite Catholics may win ’indulgences’ by following World Youth Day on Twitter
In its latest attempt to keep up with the times the Vatican has married one of its oldest traditions to the world of social media by offering “indulgences” to followers of Pope Francis’ tweets.
The church’s granted indulgences reduce the time Catholics believe they will have to spend in purgatory after they have confessed and been absolved of their sins.
The remissions got a bad name in the Middle Ages because unscrupulous churchmen sold them for large sums of money. But now indulgences are being applied to the 21st century.

The European Union has dealt a harsh blow to the Israeli settlement enterprise in a directive that insists all future agreements between the EU and Israel must explicitly exclude Jewish colonies in the West Bank or East Jerusalem.
The move, described by an Israeli official as an “earthquake”, prompted furious criticism from the Israeli prime minister over “external diktats”.
But it was hailed by Palestinians and their supporters as a significant political and economic sanction against settlements.

What changed his mind was the chaos and corruption of the FSA. He had fought four battles with the FSA, he said, and seen how they argued over the spoils in the middle of the fighting.
“Religious leaders explained to me that we should not fight blindly, that the flag of the FSA is the flag of infidel secularism and that America is our enemy, whether we declare it or not. Americans will always fight us and will never be satisfied,” he said.
“We can’t topple Bashar and hand it to the FSA to establish the same apostate secularist state. We are not fighting against Bashar only; we are fighting the system.”
The tactics with which al-Nusra is waging its war are no less brutal than those of its al-Qaida-affiliated counterparts in other areas of the Middle East. A few weeks before our visit, after a feud with a local tribe over oil, al-Nusra fighters had surrounded the village of Albu Saray and taken the whole male population of the village prisoner. A few of them were accused of killing an al-Nusra commander, and were executed, and many of the houses in the village were flattened. “Do you know why the Americans and Israelis are winning and we Arabs always lose?” asked the emir. “Because we Arabs are emotional.”
Al-Nusra, by contrast, was an international organisation, and was “not built on emotions”. Its members should be ready to kill their brothers or cousins if they were proved to have to committed apostasy.
“Hitting Albu Saray was a pre-emptive strike,” he said. “They were weak. They had a bad reputation. Kill them, and you teach more powerful tribes a lesson. They will start fearing.”

US attempts to block Edward Snowden are ’bolstering’ case for asylum | World news | The Observer
▻http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/07/us-attempts-block-snowden-bolster-case-asylum
Michael Bochenek, director of law and policy at Amnesty International, said the American government’s actions were bolstering Snowden’s case. He said claims that the US had sought to reroute the plane of Bolivia’s president, Evo Morales, amid reports that the fugitive former analyst for the National Security Agency was on board, and suggestions that vice-president Joe Biden had phoned the Ecuadorean leader, Rafael Correa, to block asylum for Snowden, carried serious implications.
“Interfering with the right to seek asylum is a serious problem in international law,” Bochenek said. “It is further evidence that he [Snowden] has a well-founded fear of persecution. This will be relevant to any state when considering an application. International law says that somebody who fears persecution should not be returned to that country.”

US drone strikes more deadly to Afghan civilians than manned aircraft – adviser | World news | guardian.co.uk
▻http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/02/us-drone-strikes-afghan-civilians
Larry Lewis, a principal research scientist at the Center for Naval Analyses, a research group with close ties to the US military, studied air strikes in Afghanistan from mid-2010 to mid-2011, using classified military data on the strikes and the civilian casualties they caused. Lewis told the Guardian he found that the missile strikes conducted by remotely piloted aircraft, commonly known as drones, were 10 times more deadly to Afghan civilians than those performed by fighter jets.
(...)
[Sarah] Holewinski [of the non-governmental organization Center for Civilians in Conflict] said the disparity reflected greater training by fighter pilots in avoiding civilian casualties.
“These findings show us that it’s not about the technology, it’s about how the technology is used,” said Holewinski. “Drones aren’t magically better at avoiding civilians than fighter jets. When pilots flying jets were given clear directives and training on civilian protection, they were able to lower civilian casualty rates.”
Yet the demand for additional drone strikes by commanders in the war zone creates pressure to reduce training, Holewinski and Lewis note.
“Adding or improving training on civilian casualty prevention is a resource decision in direct tension with the increasing demand for more UAS [unmanned aerial systems] and more operations, since additional training on civilian protection means time must be taken from somewhere else including the mission itself,” Lewis and Holewinski write in their Prism article.
