  • Hamas says 7 October attacks ’necessary step’
    21 January 2024 16:46 GMT| Middle East Eye
    https://www.middleeasteye.net/live-blog/live-blog-update/hamas-says-7-october-attacks-necessary-step

Palestinian group Hamas said on Sunday that its 7 October attacks in southern Israel were a “necessary step” against Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

But the group admitted in a 16-page report about the attack that “some faults happened… due to the rapid collapse of the Israeli security and military system, and the chaos caused along the border areas with Gaza”.

The document was the group’s first public report released in English and Arabic explaining the background to the attack, when the militants broke through Gaza’s militarised border. The attack resulted in the deaths of about 1,140 people and the taking of around 250 hostages.

The militant group said the attack was “a necessary step and a normal response to confront all Israeli conspiracies against the Palestinian people”.

“If there was any case of targeting civilians it happened accidently and in the course of the confrontation with the occupation forces,” Hamas said in the report.

“Many Israelis were killed by the Israeli army and police due to their confusion.”

In the statement, Hamas urged “the immediate halt of the Israeli aggression on Gaza, the crimes and ethnic cleansing committed against the entire Gaza population”.

“We stress that the Palestinian people have the capacity to decide their future and to arrange their internal affairs,” the statement said, adding that “no party in the world” had the right to decide on their behalf.

Hamas issues report on events of October 7

The Palestinian group has released a report explaining the motives of the attack. Here are some of the key points the group raised:

The report stresses the historical context of the conflict and the injustices that Palestinians have endured for decades, saying that Israel has been intensifying its abuses under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government. It adds that the October 7 attack was a “natural response” to the Israeli push to liquidate the Palestinian cause.
Hamas rejects accusations that it deliberately targeted civilians during the attack – in which almost 1,140 people were killed, including 700 civilians – pointing to media reports about Israeli troops targeting cars and homes with Israelis inside. But the report acknowledges that disorder had ensued during the attack as the Israeli security apparatus collapsed swiftly around Gaza.
The report urges an investigation into “all crimes in occupied Palestine” by the International Criminal Court, calling on its prosecutor to “immediately” start a probe on the ground.
The Palestinian group reiterates that it is in a conflict against Israel, not against Jews because of their religion.
Hamas calls for ending Israel’s offensive on Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the territory, saying that Palestinians should be able to decide their own future.

“We have no information on the whereabouts or condition of these two vital members of a beloved cultural institution in Jenin. The last word we had from Ahmed Tobasi was, ‘They are going house to house. They are taking everyone,’” the organisation said in a statement.

“More than 100 Palestinians have been seized in Jenin … The Israeli army has repeatedly, violently invaded the Jenin refugee camp where The Freedom Theatre is situated, with each attack escalating in violence.”

At least six people have been killed in the latest invasion, which saw armoured bulldozers tearing up streets, drones dropping bombs on Palestinian homes, and a siege of the hospital blocking ambulances.

“The Israeli army has killed 58 people in Jenin alone since October 7, including children,” the statement said.

• Border surveillance footage from 7 October ’disappears’: Israeli officers

Israeli reserve officers say surveillance video and audio recordings from the Gaza border during the Hamas attack have been deleted, potentially to prevent an investigation into what happened that day

Israeli military surveillance video from the Gaza border from 7 October, the day of Hamas’ surprise attack, has disappeared, Israeli news site Walla reported [ https://news.walla.co.il/item/3626341 ] on 3 December.

During a visit by a senior female officer from the Israeli army general staff to the various division headquarters, senior officers in the reserves commented that “an invisible hand” had deleted videos from the various military surveillance cameras showing the events of that day, the Hebrew language outlet stated.

The videos were deleted from the military network known as “ZeeTube,” potentially to prevent their use in an in-depth investigation of how thousands of Hamas fighters managed to breach the border fence and infiltrate Israel to carry out the attack.

“We sat down with one of the generals and were going to show him a video about one of the events, and we found out that someone had deleted the videos,” said a senior reserve officer from one of the divisions, adding, “It was very embarrassing. Then suspicion arose as to why someone would do that. And at the end the excuses started that it was decided to give special privileges to certain officers to view the footage. Do officers in our ranks need privileges? It looks like a war between generals and officials. There is a feeling that everyone is now trying to take care of themselves for the day after,” when an investigation into events of that day takes place.

Israeli officials, including top generals and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have acknowledged the Hamas attack, in which 1,200 Israeli soldiers and civilians were killed, resulted from an intelligence failure. However, they insist the events of that day cannot be investigated until after the war in Gaza, in which some 20,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli bombing, ends. (...)

    News Desk | DEC 1, 2023

Israel has been using AI to generate targets to strike during its war on the Gaza Strip, The Guardian reported on 1 December.

The war which broke out after Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October has given Israel the opportunity to “use [AI] in a much wider theatre of operations and, in particular, to deploy an AI target-creation platform called ‘the Gospel,’ which has significantly accelerated a lethal production line of targets that officials have compared to a ‘factory,’” the outlet reported.

According to The Guardian, the Gospel AI platform has played “a central role” in the Gaza war.

The platform works to produce targeting recommendations “through the rapid and automatic extraction of intelligence … with the goal of a complete match between the recommendation of the machine and the identification carried out by a person,” the Israeli army said in a statement last month. Human cost of Israel’s war on Gaza

It’s been 55 days since the start of the war.

In that time, Israel has turned Gaza into what the UN has called “a graveyard for thousands of children“, waging a war on hospitals, schools and homes.

This is the human cost of Israel’s war:

The Gaza Health Ministry says more than 15,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 7.
The figure includes more than 6,150 children.
With at least 7,000 people still missing or feared buried under the rubble, the actual death toll could be far higher.
More than 36,000 Palestinians have been wounded, many with life-altering injuries.
With 26 of Gaza’s 35 hospitals out of service, their chances of getting treatment are slim.

  • ‘Devastating’: Volunteer recalls last hours at besieged Indonesian Hospital

    https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/27/volunteer-calls-final-hours-at-indonesian-hospital-amid-israeli-siege

Medan, Indonesia – As Israeli tanks and troops laid siege to the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza last week, volunteer medical worker Fikri Rofiul Haq faced the choice of evacuating to safety or staying with his patients.

Haq and fellow his Indonesian colleagues, Reza Aldilla Kurniawan and Farid Zazabil Al Ayubi, volunteers with the Jakarta-based Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C), opted to stay put until the Israeli military forced them to leave, he said.

“We were evacuated via a route used by the International Red Cross with the permission of the Israeli army. There were three evacuations on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and we were evacuated last as we prioritised the wounded who were at the Indonesian Hospital,” Haq told Al Jazeera.

Haq said that Israeli forces deliberately destroyed the Indonesian-funded hospital’s only working generator by setting it on fire and killed 12 people with indiscriminate shelling of the first, second and third floors of the building.

“Before we were evacuated, the attacks got worse and worse, hour by hour,” said Haq, who was unable to communicate for several weeks until his evacuation to Khan Younis.

“I saw it with my own eyes. There were three large tanks around 50 metres [54 yards] from the Indonesian Hospital building and they fired periodically at the hospital, which was devastating. Now the Indonesian Hospital has been completely taken over by the Israeli army,” he said.

A retired Israeli army major has admitted Israel probably killed some of the 1,200 Israelis the government claims Hamas murdered on 7 October.

The confession, discovered by The Electronic Intifada, is one of the highest level confirmations to date that Israel killed many, if not most, of the civilians that died during the Palestinian offensive.

On Saturday, it was revealed that an official Israel source had concluded for the first time that Israeli fire hit at least some Israelis.

This growing body of evidence undermines the official Israeli narrative of savage Palestinian terrorists invading Israel bent on slaughtering civilians. Hamas maintains that its targets were military and that it did not intentionally kill civilians. (...)

What have Israel and Hamas agreed to?

Both sides have agreed to a four-day pause in fighting.
In exchange, Hamas has agreed to release 50 civilian women and children out of the 237 captives abducted since October 7.
As part of the deal, Israel has agreed to release 150 Palestinian women and children from its prisons.
Qatar has said that the deal would allow an increase in the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Israel said it was willing to extend the pause beyond the four-day period, adding a day for every 10 additional hostages released by Hamas.
It is unclear whether Israel will release additional Palestinian prisoners if the truce is extended. (...)

  • La fureur moralisatrice de la gauche israélienne
Par Ilan Pappe | 16 novembre 2023 – The Palestine Chronicle – Traduction : Chronique de Palestine – Chris et Dine

    https://www.chroniquepalestine.com/la-fureur-moralisatrice-de-la-gauche-israelienne

    Updates from Gaza

Hisham Zaqout, our colleague at Al Jazeera Arabic, has shared these updates from Gaza:

Israeli air strikes targeted a house in Rafah, where many were killed and injured.
The Indonesian Hospital is under an Israeli army siege. Some of the medical staff who evacuated al-Shifa Hospital moved to the Indonesian Hospital.
Israeli tanks and vehicles moved from Beit Hanoon to the Indonesian Hospital and are targeting it with artillery shells and shooting anybody that moves around the area.
Heavy rain and winds are making it harder for the people to live in tents after Israeli air strikes destroyed their houses.

Video shows Israeli strike hitting hospital in northern Gaza

Video footage shows the aftermath of an attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip that hit the intensive care room in the children’s department.

Israeli forces fired “a missile or artillery shell into an intensive care room in the hospital’s children’s department, and this is the fragment of the missile”, Dr Ahmed al-Kahlot , director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, told Al Jazeera while holding up a piece of metal.

“Israeli criminality has exceeded the limit,” said al-Kahlot.

A clip also showed the shell penetrating the ceiling of the hospital room. It is unclear how many casualties were inflicted.

  • LA CPI PEUT-ELLE JUGER ISRAËL ? UNE ARMÉE D’AVOCATS PORTE PLAINTE POUR « GÉNOCIDE »
    Le Media | 17 nov. 2023
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRwwWkCrr3g

EU foreign policy chief: Israel must respect international law
Josep Borrell has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Here are a few of his comments:

The war against Hamas in Gaza is the result of a general political failure of the international community.
The European Union calls for an immediate humanitarian truce and more opportunities for aid to reach civilians in Gaza.
There are thousands of civilian casualties in Gaza, and Israel must respect international humanitarian law.
There is increasing settler violence and we stressed the Israeli side to control the violence in the West Bank.
This war showed the European Union that we cannot leave the Palestinian issue without a solution.

Al-Shifa Hospital is a ‘big prison’, says director

As Israel continues its raid of al-Shifa Hospital, the director of al-Shifa says the medical compound has become a “big prison” and a “mass grave” for all those inside.

Muhammed Abu Salmiya tells Al Jazeera that there are 7,000 people in the hospital and staff are still working to help patients but they “lost all those who were in the intensive care unit”.

“We are left with nothing, no power, no food, no water. with every passing minute, we are losing a life. Overnight we lost 22 persons, [and] for the past three days the hospital has been kept under siege,” Salmiya said.

He added that they have appealed to leave the hospital but are being denied by Israeli forces.

“It’s a war crime. A full-fledged war crime,” he said.
